Essaouira makes far more sense once someone explains it. The medina is a UNESCO site not because it is pretty — though it is — but because it is an unusually intact example of an 18th-century fortified port, laid out on a European grid for Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah and designed to funnel trade through one harbour the crown controlled.

A good two-hour walk takes in the Skala de la Ville and its brass cannons, Place Moulay Hassan, the mellah where a large Jewish merchant community lived and traded, the port and the Skala du Port, and the Gnaoua musical heritage that gives the June festival its name.

Pick a licensed guide. Unofficial "guides" who attach themselves to you in the street are really taking you to shops that pay them commission, and the tour ends when the shopping does.
