Let us be honest about this one: it is six hours of driving for six hours in Marrakech. If you have any flexibility, spend two nights in Marrakech instead. But plenty of people base themselves in Essaouira for a week and want to see Jemaa el-Fna once, and for them this works.

The road climbs through the argan forest and past the goat-in-a-tree photo stops — some of which are staged, with goats lifted into branches for tips. Organised trips usually include the Jardin Majorelle or Bahia Palace, the souks and Jemaa el-Fna, with a couple of hours free.

The alternative is a Supratours or CTM bus, which takes about three hours, costs very little, and lets you set your own schedule. Book the return before you leave, especially in summer.
