Sidi Kaouki is 25 km south of Essaouira: a long, exposed beach break that picks up most swell directions, with a line-up that is rarely crowded and a village that has barely changed, two or three cafés and not much else. The waves are usually longer and more regular than in town, which is why the school goes there several times a week, on the days the forecast favours it.
The day starts with a pick-up around 9am at your hotel or the school, then 25 minutes through the argan forest. After a briefing on the beach you surf two sessions, with lunch in between at a village café (tagine, salad, fresh juice), and you are back in Essaouira in the late afternoon. The van carries boards for every level, from soft-tops to shortboards, along with wetsuits and rash vests.
It suits intermediates best, but beginners are welcome after at least one lesson, once they are comfortable in the whitewater: the instructor keeps them on the inside and sends improvers further out, where the wave breaks cleaner. The water is a degree or two cooler than in Essaouira. If the forecast is completely flat, the trip moves to another day at no cost.
