The circuit runs south of the river: beach track, then up into the dune field and the argan forest behind Diabat, where the trees are old and low and sometimes have goats in them. Guides ride in front and behind, and the machines are automatic, so no licence or clutch skill is needed.

Two hours is the right length. One hour is barely a warm-up and a chunk of it goes on learning the controls; three hours is more sand in your teeth than anyone wants. Buggies seat two if someone in the group would rather not drive.

It is the loudest activity in Essaouira and it runs through a working landscape, so stay on the marked tracks. Argan trees take decades to grow and the cooperatives that harvest them are somebody’s income.
